Medical Care

Obtaining Medical Care under the Defense Base Act…

1. How to obtain medical care:

If you need medical treatment for your work injury, simply ask your employer to authorize treatment by a doctor of your choice. If it is an emergency or if you are unable to contact your employer, go to the nearest hospital or physician, but be sure to let your employer know as soon as possible. One of the benefits of the Defense Base Act is that you can obtain medical care with any physician of your choice. Do your own research to find the best doctor near where you live in the States.  If you need an orthopedic doctor, find the best one and let the insurance carrier know. If the best orthopedic doctor in your city is the team physician for your local professional sports team, tell the insurance company you wish to treat with this doctor. Do not allow the insurance adjuster or a nurse case manager choose your physician for you or convince you that you cannot see a particular doctor you choose. This is important to your claim.

2. Are chiropractors permitted under the Defense Base Act?

Unless it is to treat a subluxation of the spine, chiropractors will not be authorized to provide care.
